Navigating Scams: Expert Tips from the NM Department of Justice

The holiday season is a time for joy and togetherness, but it’s also a time when scammers become particularly active. Today we had the honor of hosting Lauren Rodriguez, Communications Director for the New Mexico Department of Justice, who shared crucial tips on protecting yourself from fraud during these festive times.

With online shopping surging during the holidays, dangers like phishing emails and malicious links are rampant. One common scam involves receiving fake shipping notifications after an Amazon purchase. Rodriguez urged consumers to examine the source of such messages closely and verify them through official channels before clicking on any links.

Rodriguez also touched on more sophisticated fraud techniques such as spoofing, where scammers alter caller ID information to mimic legitimate organizations. She advised listeners to hang up suspicious calls and directly contact companies using official numbers. This proactive approach minimizes the risk of falling victim to scams.

The conversation also looks at personal data security. Rodriguez highlighted the benefits of credit monitoring services like Experian, which can alert users to unauthorized credit activity and help prevent identity theft. However, she cautioned against scams that disguise themselves as protective services.

Part of the Department of Justice’s mission is to educate the public about less visible threats. Their recent efforts include a Charity Fraud Awareness campaign, which aims to help donors verify the legitimacy of organizations before contributing. This initiative underscores the need for transparency and accountability in charitable giving.

Ultimately, the episode served as a sobering reminder that as we prepare to celebrate, we must also be vigilant. The scammers’ techniques may be evolving, but armed with knowledge and trusted practices, consumers can protect themselves and enjoy a safe, secure holiday season.
