Special thanks to Lee Logston, AICP Midtown Asset Development Manager, Community and Economic Development Department, for providing this information.

What is the Midtown Redevelopment Project?

Ever since the closing of the SantaFe University of Art and Design in 2018, the City has been planning and working toward redeveloping the campus into a mixed-use development that will feature housing (including affordable), film, open space and public amenities, educational opportunities, and community arts in a pedestrian-friendly space that is accessible to all. It is the City’s hope that Midtown will become a new center for Santa Fe that will offer something for everyone.

What are the plans?

The Midtown Redevelopment Plans are composed of two parts. The Land Development Plan, which is the regulatory framework which determines allowed uses, a network of new roads and bike/pedestrian paths, and design standards. It is the plan for the physical development of Midtown. The other part is the Community Development Plan, which is the policy-oriented document that expresses the wishes of the residents of Santa Fe for the space, as gathered through community outreach and participation over the last several years. The Community Development Plan addresses community concerns about affordable housing; community arts and programming; providing spaces, activities, and opportunities for all residents of Santa Fe, especially the disadvantaged; jobs; addressing social and economic inequity; and honoring Santa Fe’s rich history. The Community Development Plan makes policy recommendations for the Governing Body to consider in order to achieve these goals.

What is the timeline?

The Land Development Plan and associated applications are under review by the City’s Land Use Department right now and are scheduled to be heard by the Planning Commission on October 6. This is a public hearing where any resident can attend and have input or submit comments ahead of time. The Commission will make a recommendation to the Governing Body, which we expect to hold a public hearing and decide to adopt the Plans on November 9. The Governing Body will also make a decision on the Community Development Plan that night. Both the Land Development Plan and the Community Development Plan and all associated application and other materials are available for the public to see at www.midtowndistrictsantafe.com and www.midtowndistrictsantafe.org. Many of the items you can view are available in English and Spanish.
